A good filter can be the whole reason for a Jakarta outing. These six reviewed cafés offer something worth making time for, from a single brew at the counter to a full tasting.
Onward is the first stop for a cup and beans to take home. Choose Instinct when you have an afternoon for coffee, or reserve Omakafé if you want the four-course format. At The Room, go alone or as a pair: space is very limited.
This is a choice of destinations, not a one-day crawl. Instinct is in Alam Sutera, Tangerang, outside Jakarta proper. Onward, Pesanggrahan, Senayan, Gandaria and Citywalk are also spread apart; check journey times before adding a second stop.
Onward Coffee Company
Onward Coffee Company hides behind a patterned concrete-block frontage on Jalan A.M. Sangaji in Petojo Utara, on the western side of central Jakarta. Zigzag openings reveal shelves of coffee before the entrance gives way to a low-lit bar: rough grey walls, deep wood, raw metal shelving, globe lamps and a rounded counter with stools pulled close to the brewing. This is a small, deliberate room for tasting coffee and talking to the person making it, not a broad cafe for an unplanned lunch.
Onward Coffee Company · Petojo Utara / Cideng
A split shot lets you try the same espresso straight and with milk. It is a useful introduction to Onward's light roasting, with the coffees changing as new lots arrive.
Light house roasts, a slow-bar filter and a shelf of beans to take home. Open Wednesday to Sunday, with a 4pm close.
Instinct Roastery sits in Alam Sutera, a planned township in Tangerang west of Jakarta proper, so the trip is a deliberate cross-city move rather than an easy addition to a central route. The PROBAT roaster occupies the ground floor; a slanted wooden ramp leads to bright second-floor rooms with timber surfaces, large windows and a U-shaped bar. Ten seats face the main brewing station, with a smaller U-bar in the adjoining room.
Instinct Roastery · Alam Sutera / Tangerang
Founder Christian Lie began brewing and roasting at home in Jambi in 2014. The Alam Sutera shop now houses a PROBAT UG15 downstairs and a retail selection of Indonesian and international coffees upstairs. Ask which bags are ready to brew if you are buying for home.

The Room
The Room is hidden on the first floor of the Bintaro Parkview commercial and apartment complex in Pesanggrahan, near Jakarta's south-western edge. Its original bar occupies roughly four square metres: a compact modular counter, coffee equipment kept within arm's reach and only a few places to sit before the visit spills into the corridor outside. Ask security for Tower A25 if the entrance is not obvious. This is a destination for one carefully chosen coffee and a conversation with the barista, not a central cafe for a large group or a day on a laptop.

Espresso beans rotate, with the barista explaining the available origins. The small counter makes it easy to ask a question while your drink is prepared.

Omakafé
Omakafé occupies the fifth floor of Jl. Senayan 65 in Kebayoran Baru, south Jakarta. The compact room is built for a guided drink service: a stainless-steel counter with a handful of stools, a short bench opposite, dark surfaces, pale curtains and amber wall lights. Book the tasting bar when you want the full coffee-omakase format; the small capacity and premium set price make this a planned visit, not a casual stop for a large group.
Omakafé · Senayan / Kebayoran Baru
The current Indonesian coffee set uses an Excelsa from Sukawangi in Sumedang, West Java. Its first course is a direct filter brew. The later drinks pull that coffee into more elaborate recipes: DOA Vetiver combines dairy, oat and cashew with vetiver and konbu; Wedang Noodle brings pandan water, ginger juice and masoia vanilla syrup into the filter; Torch Ginger pairs espresso with a floral cordial and botanical water. Those recipes are specific enough to justify the set, while the opening filter gives you a reference point before the bar starts changing the ingredient around it.
The Senayan coffee set starts with filter before moving into composed drinks. Choose an à-la-carte brew if you want a single cup.

One Fifteenth Coffee
One Fifteenth Coffee's Gandaria original sits on a side street in Kebayoran Baru, south of central Jakarta's business towers. A broad glass frontage opens onto a long, pale room with communal tables, timber furniture, planted edges and space around the counter. Layered wall artwork breaks up the room without making it feel like a showroom.

Espresso, piccolo, cappuccino and flat white sit alongside the manual brews. The cafe works with Morph Coffee Roasters and has long featured Indonesian coffee, with single origins changing through the year.
Compare two filters, or one coffee prepared three ways, then stay for breakfast at the Gandaria original.
Common Grounds began at Citywalk Sudirman, a compact mall in Karet Tengsin just west of central Jakarta's main office corridor. The ground-floor cafe opens straight onto the mall concourse: a long counter, coffee equipment in full view, dark-framed tables and a brighter run of seats at the edge. Office workers use it for breakfast meetings and lunch, while the brew bar and retail coffee give a visitor a reason to look past the shopping-centre setting.

The espresso menu covers straight shots, milk drinks and signatures such as Espresso on the Rocks. Seasonal blends change the selection; Major Tom has appeared as espresso, filter and in composed drinks. Ask which coffee is being served if you want to compare it with a retail bag.
