Onward Coffee Company hides behind a patterned concrete-block frontage on Jalan A.M. Sangaji in Petojo Utara, on the western side of central Jakarta. Zigzag openings reveal shelves of coffee before the entrance gives way to a low-lit bar: rough grey walls, deep wood, raw metal shelving, globe lamps and a rounded counter with stools pulled close to the brewing. This is a small, deliberate room for tasting coffee and talking to the person making it, not a broad cafe for an unplanned lunch.
Onward roasts in the adjoining space, with light profiles, Indonesian lots and experimental brewing central to the offer. Come for a slow-bar filter or split-shot espresso, then browse the beans. Opening hours are short, from Wednesday to Sunday, and the room has limited seats.
Coffee
A split shot lets you try the same espresso straight and with milk. It is a useful introduction to Onward's light roasting, with the coffees changing as new lots arrive.
The selection ranges from Indonesian coffees and washed Ethiopians to experimental fermentations. Some lots carry a substantial premium; the barista can explain the process and price before you choose.
Filter
Filter is the main reason to cross town. The current retail list reaches from West and East Java to Ethiopia, while past releases have included rare varietals, private lots and competition coffees. At the slow bar, ask for the most contrasting pair available or whether one coffee can be served hot and over ice. The 50/50 format serves the same brew at two temperatures, making its aroma, acidity and sweetness easier to compare.
Retail bags line the shelves behind the counter. The online range also includes espresso roasts and nitrogen-flushed drip bags for travel. If you like what you are drinking, ask whether the same lot is available to take home.
Food
There is no regular food menu, so eat before coming if you plan to stay for several coffees.
Service & Room
The building combines two former shop units but keeps the customer area close to the central bar. Behind it, the working roastery shifts into brighter, laboratory-like light with sand-coloured tile and pale finishes; the coffee bar uses timber, rough concrete and warmer lamps. That contrast makes the production side visible without turning the room into a factory tour. The curved counter keeps the grinder, brewer, cups and conversation in the same frame.
Baristas are at their best when you invite a recommendation. Most seats face the work, so a long filter order naturally becomes a short conversation about process, flavour and the range of beans. Seating is limited, the frontage is easy to miss and street parking can be awkward. The calmest visit is a purposeful one during the compact daytime hours, without a laptop or a large group.
Why Filter Notes shortlisted Onward Coffee Company
Onward is one of the strongest stops here for light roasts, a slow-bar filter and beans to take home. The small counter makes conversation easy. Set aside time within its Wednesday-to-Sunday hours; the bar closes at 4pm.
