Common Grounds began at Citywalk Sudirman, a compact mall in Karet Tengsin just west of central Jakarta's main office corridor. The ground-floor cafe opens straight onto the mall concourse: a long counter, coffee equipment in full view, dark-framed tables and a brighter run of seats at the edge. Office workers use it for breakfast meetings and lunch, while the brew bar and retail coffee give a visitor a reason to look past the shopping-centre setting.
This is the original address of a much larger Indonesian group, and it still makes the clearest introduction to the brand. Come for a house espresso or manual filter, then add food if the visit falls across breakfast or lunch. The range is broad enough for mixed groups, but prices sit above the everyday Jakarta cafe level and the room becomes much less relaxed around the midday office rush.
Coffee
The espresso menu covers straight shots, milk drinks and signatures such as Espresso on the Rocks. Seasonal blends change the selection; Major Tom has appeared as espresso, filter and in composed drinks. Ask which coffee is being served if you want to compare it with a retail bag.
Common Grounds roasts its own coffee, with Indonesian lots, international releases and drip bags on the retail shelves. Its brewer Bayu Prawiro placed second in the 2025 World Brewers Cup using Panamanian Gesha and Indonesian Excelsa.
Filter
The manual-brew list has included washed Kenya Kirinyaga, Ecuadorian Typica Mejorado, Indonesian single origins and premium Panama lots. Availability changes; ask for the current list and whether the bar recommends a coffee hot or over ice.
The Citywalk counter is at its best before the lunch queue, when there is time to talk through process, roast and recipe. Drink a filter there, then choose retail beans only after tasting. Rare coffees can push the bill up quickly, so the house or Indonesian selection is the more sensible introduction unless a particular lot is the purpose of the trip.
Food
Food has been central since Common Grounds opened in 2014. The current offer stretches from breakfast and toast to pasta, rice dishes, sandwiches, cakes and rotating Indonesian-led specials. Espresso with a full breakfast remains the classic order, while dishes such as a tempeh toastie or black-tobiko truffle spaghetti show how far the kitchen travels beyond eggs and pastry.
That breadth makes Citywalk easy for a group whose interest in coffee is uneven. It also creates the main inconsistency: the kitchen can be slower than the bar, particularly across lunch, and not every large menu item carries the same care as the coffee. Come early for breakfast or use a quieter afternoon for coffee and cake; at noon, allow time for a proper meal rather than treating the cafe as a quick takeaway counter.
Service & Room
The room is modern, open to the mall and more functional than intimate. Tables work well for a short meeting, the counter keeps the coffee process visible and the air-conditioned setting is a practical break from central Jakarta's heat. Music and conversation rise as lunch approaches, and the office crowd can make the cafe feel like an extension of the surrounding towers.
Bar service is strongest when there is space for a question about beans or manual brew. The wider operation is less predictable at peak times: long waits and uneven table service appear often enough to plan around. Arrive before 11am for a filter and breakfast, or after 2pm for a quieter look at the retail shelf. Choose another cafe if the purpose is a secluded room or an uninterrupted afternoon of laptop work.
Why Filter Notes shortlisted Common Grounds
Citywalk is a useful central stop for house-roasted coffee and a full breakfast. There is enough on the filter list to interest a keen coffee drinker, and enough in the kitchen for everyone else. Avoid the noon office rush if you want time at the brew bar.
