Blacksmith is a small, freestanding cafe on Westheimer Road in Montrose, southwest of downtown Houston. Inside, a dark counter faces closely spaced tables and a row of stools; exposed ceiling beams and brick walls frame the espresso machine. A shaded patio offers outdoor seats. Come hungry: coffee shares the table with scratch biscuits, breakfast tacos and cooked plates substantial enough to cover lunch.
Greenway Coffee founders David Buehrer and Ecky Prabanto opened Blacksmith in 2013, bringing their Houston roasting operation into a neighbourhood cafe with a serious kitchen. A cortado and sausage biscuit make an easy first order, with rotating pour-overs offering a reason to stay for a second cup.
Coffee
Greenway supplies the coffee, with espresso, macchiato, cortado, cappuccino and flat white on the bar menu. Daily black coffee and cold brew cover a quicker stop. For something sweeter, the seasonal drinks go beyond a flavoured latte: Strawberry Malt combines espresso with strawberry and malted white chocolate, while Americano in Milan adds tonic and a non-alcoholic aperitif. The specials change, so check the board before settling on a favourite.
Filter
Ask what is available as a pour-over. Recent offerings have included H2 Gesha with black tea and citrus notes and Gatta Anaerobic with tropical fruit notes. Those are examples of the range rather than permanent orders; choose from the coffees open that day. Retail bags are available if you want to take Greenway home. For a table of mixed tastes, loose-leaf tea, chai and matcha provide plenty of alternatives.
Food
Start with a biscuit: creme fraiche and jam for a lighter breakfast, or sausage, egg and cheese for something more filling. The Blacksmith Plate adds two eggs, avocado, home fries and a choice of bacon or sausage. Beyond the bakery, the dill scramble comes on pumpernickel with smoked salmon and pickled red onion; spicy eggs and rice bring tempeh, sambal and crisp garlic. The kitchen makes Blacksmith a breakfast or lunch stop as well as a coffee bar.
Service & Room
Order at the counter and take a seat for the food. The room can become loud and cramped at breakfast peaks. Arrive early if sitting together matters. There is parking behind the cafe, and the patio is useful when Houston's weather cooperates. Wi-Fi is available, but limited outlets make a charged laptop essential; breakfast and conversation are the stronger reasons to claim a table.
