01 / The cover story Object of the week

Control without noise

A high-capacity home roaster anchors a quiet-control edit: two lucid current coffees, three tools that reduce variables and two pieces of coffee-company design worth keeping.

Gear spotlight

Aillio · Machines

Bullet R2 Pro

A 1.2 kg induction roaster with unusually granular heat and airflow control, infrared bean sensing and Roastime logging.

The R2 Pro makes repeatable small-batch roasting the week's most ambitious expression of control without turning it into an industrial installation.

US$5,299

Orderable from Aillio's official global store with a stated five-to-six-week lead time and two-year warranty.

Kii AB Washed – Embu & Kirinyaga, Kenya

Kii Factory, Rung'eto FCS, Embu & Kirinyaga, Kenya; 1,708m · Washed · Omni/filter · cranberry, rhubarb, redcurrant

A classic Kii lot supplies the clean, high-acid reference point: dry-fermented, carefully washed and slowly dried rather than process-led.

03 / The objects 5 more to know

The gear edit

The objects making brewing more precise, more enjoyable or simply better looking.

Vacuum brewer

Weber Workshops · Manual brewing

The BIRD

A 350ml no-bypass brewer that uses a hand-operated vacuum to separate brew and grounds without pressure or electricity.

BIRD turns immersion timing and separation into a tactile, legible ritual with unusually little visual noise.

Flat-burr hand grinder

Pietro · Grinders

Pietro Manual Coffee Grinder

A vertical 58mm flat-burr hand grinder built for unusually even filter grinding.

Full-size flat burrs in a manual chassis make burr choice, not motor speed, the defining variable.

Invisible display

Acaia · Tools & water

Umbra

A compact coffee scale with a simplified display and the responsive weighing expected from Acaia.

Removing the display makes the scale almost disappear when a quieter counter matters more than another glowing readout.

Small find

Tim Wendelboe · Accessories & oddities

TW T-shirt “Caballero”

A producer-referencing graphic T-shirt from the Oslo roaster.

A genuinely coffee-specific farm graphic at an unusually accessible price, rather than generic logo merch.

Small find

Coffee Collective · Accessories & oddities

Weekend Tote

A spacious recycled-cotton tote with short and long handles plus an inner pocket.

The geometric pattern and genuinely useful capacity make this more designed carryall than token roaster tote.
