Volante Café is reached through a back gate and up a staircase at Rua Jornalista Orlando Dantas 15, near the Botafogo–Flamengo boundary south of central Rio. An open-air terrace sits above the residential-looking entrance. Use the house number when finding the cafe.
Coffee
Volante grew from a subscription club into a roaster and cafe, with Brazilian microlots alongside changing coffees from overseas roasters. Filter is the reason to linger: the team explains the origins and processing before brewing, so ask for a comparison of the day’s coffees. Espresso and bags for home are available too. Check prices before choosing a rare lot.
Food
The small food selection includes savoury pastries, sandwiches and changing desserts. Choices include mushroom-and-cheese twists and a coppa sandwich with buffalo mozzarella and rocket. Choose from the day’s counter rather than planning a full brunch.
Service & Room
A wooden counter with drawers, small tables and trailing plants fill the covered veranda. Its open sides let in daylight, while the upstairs position keeps it away from the traffic below. Allow time for the baristas’ explanations and a second coffee; this is a seated tasting stop with stairs to negotiate on arrival.
Why Filter Notes shortlisted Volante Café
Come for Brazilian microlots, changing guest coffees and help choosing between them. The hidden veranda rewards a slow visit; rare lots can make it an expensive one.
