La Cabra

Chueca / Justicia, Madrid

Go for light-roasted coffee, on-site cardamom buns, and a former goldsmith’s workshop just north of Gran Vía, with time to sit down.

La Cabra’s Madrid café occupies a former goldsmith’s workshop just north of Gran Vía, the broad avenue through the city centre. Inside, dark timber, a stone counter, and preserved stucco ceilings lead through connected rooms in an 1855 building. This is the southern edge of Chueca, within the Justicia neighbourhood: an easy central stop for light-roasted coffee and an unhurried bakery breakfast.

The Danish roaster opened here on 9 October 2026. Its first Madrid address brings seasonal coffee and a working bakery together, so the best visit gives both some attention: choose a cup, look over the day’s bakes, and leave time to eat.

Coffee

La Cabra roasts its own coffee, and the emphasis is on lighter profiles that keep the differences between origins visible. Espresso, cortado, and milk drinks provide the familiar starting point. Ask which coffee is running before ordering: the selection moves with incoming harvests, and the producer and processing method matter more here than a permanent house tasting note. If you usually drink darker, heavier espresso, expect a brighter direction.

Filter

There are two sensible ways into brewed coffee: batch brew for a straightforward cup, or a manually prepared seasonal selection when you want to spend longer with the coffee. Check the price before choosing a special lot. The main coffee range stretches from €3 to €25, with some rarer selections above that; an everyday drink and a tasting-led order can produce very different bills. Start with the brew menu, then decide how much of breakfast you want to devote to the cup.

Pastry

Baking earns equal attention. Sourdough loaves, laminated pastries, and the signature cardamom bun are made on site, with fresh batches baked through the day. The bun is the obvious first order; bread with butter and cheese offers a savoury alternative when you want breakfast without another sweet pastry. This is a bakery breakfast, with enough to make eating a reason to come. Matcha is also available if your companion wants something outside the coffee menu.

Service & Room

The linked rooms keep the old building’s proportions, while stone, dark wood, and metal details give the counter and seating areas different textures. The retained ceiling is worth looking up at before the pastry case takes over. There are no table reservations, and the daily 8am–8pm schedule gives you room to choose a morning breakfast or a later coffee. For now, allow extra time while the opening rush settles, particularly if sitting together matters.

Why Filter Notes shortlisted La Cabra

Come for seasonal filter coffee, an on-site bakery with a clear cardamom-and-sourdough focus, and an old Madrid workshop that gives the visit a setting beyond the coffee bar. The strongest order is coffee with a bun, or bread, butter, and cheese if you want to stay for breakfast. Check the price of special coffees before ordering; the baking is as much a reason to cross town as the cup.
