Raíz Coffee’s glass frontage opens onto Calle Porta, just south of Parque Kennedy in Miraflores, Lima’s coastal district south of the historic centre. Illuminated shelves of coffee bags stand behind the narrow bar; a few small tables leave little room to spread out. Take a window seat for a cortado and a canelé, or order a filter to explore the Peruvian coffees on the shelf.
Coffee
Raíz roasts in Surquillo, the district immediately inland from Miraflores. Co-founder Andrés Pérez selects coffees and develops the roasts, with beans from growing regions including Pozuzo, Cusco and Ayacucho. The espresso programme has used a blend from Finca Voller in Pozuzo. Order a cortado or flat white if you prefer coffee with milk. The retail shelf carries beans for espresso and filter; ask which current roast suits your brewer.
Filter
Origami is the manual brewer to ask for at Porta. The selection has included Geisha from Ayacucho, Java and Pacamara from Jhonny Vidurrizaga in Villa Rica, and Isaac Espinoza’s SL09 from Cusco. These are changing lots, so choose from the day’s selection rather than arriving for a particular bag. Cold brew and nitro coffee are also available.
Pastry
The pastry selection is small. Canelés, croissants and slices of cake give you something to eat beside a coffee without committing to a full meal. A warmed canelé is the first pick; carrot cake or a cheese-and-jam croissant makes a more substantial accompaniment.
Service & Room
English-speaking baristas and time spent explaining beans help visitors order beyond their usual drink. Seats are the limitation: come alone or with one companion, and be prepared to take your coffee away if the tables are full. The windows face the street, so a short sit also gives you a view of people passing.
