Behind Onehunga Mall, the main shopping street in a suburb south of Auckland’s centre, Dear Deer’s original café pairs a small roasting counter with a choice of green beans. Choose an origin and roast level, then watch a batch being roasted for you to take home. That hands-on purchase, alongside Japanese-style filter coffee, earns the trip.
Coffee
The compact Jet Roaster handles small batches, with light, medium and dark options. Explain how you brew at home and ask for help choosing the beans and roast; the selection changes, so there is more value in that conversation than arriving set on one origin. You can buy Kalita drippers and filter papers here too.
Order a hand-brewed filter coffee to explore the beans, or a flat white from the espresso bar. Matcha and hojicha are also available. If you want beans roasted to order, arrive during the roasting window: 8am–2pm on weekdays, until 2.30pm at weekends. The café stays open until 3.30pm, but roasting finishes earlier.
Food & seating
An expansion added indoor seating and counter space in May 2026. Cheese on Toast sandwiches, muffins and doughnuts give you something to eat while you wait; the self-order kiosk handles straightforward orders, while bean choices are worth discussing with staff. Come for a filter coffee and a bag roasted to your preference, leaving time for the roasting and cooling.
