At Hastings, the roasting equipment sits in view of the coffee counter. Production for brewing, retail, and wholesale happens on small Aillio Bullet roasters behind the counter, and the menu is set up to keep a wide range of coffees in play.
The two cafés serve different itineraries. Hastings is the roasting-room visit, while the Mount Pleasant café shares the Please! Beverage Co. address on West 5th Avenue, south of False Creek. Check which address you are navigating to before setting off: they are separate stops on opposite sides of the inlet. If you are choosing beans, start with the flavours and processing styles you enjoy and ask which of the available coffees would suit your home brewer.
Coffee
Prototype's coffee programme is broad, bright, and deliberately choice-heavy. Drip, espresso, pour-over, seasonal espresso drinks, cold coffee, matcha drinks, and a rotating list of classic, juicy, experimental, decaf, and top-tier coffees give the bar its range. The best order is a pour-over or a coffee flight when available, followed by beans from the shelf if something lands. Milk drinks are there, but the sharper reason to go is the chance to taste several coffees from one roaster in one room.
Food
Choose the Hastings room for a coffee tasting, or Mount Pleasant if you want more food with the same roaster's beans. At Strathcona, waffle donuts and bottled drinks sit beside the coffee; the Mount Pleasant room adds sandwiches, salads, and weekend breakfast. A waffle makes this a coffee-and-snack stop; allow a separate stop if you want a full meal.
Service & Room
This is not the calmest long-stay cafe in Vancouver. Seating can be limited, with laptop limits and shorter stays part of the practical expectation. The Hastings café is east of the main downtown sightseeing area. Plan the journey around this address, and allow time at the counter to choose from the coffee list. Mount Pleasant provides a second option south of False Creek.
