Scenery beans popup in many good coffee shops but this is the first time I’ve visited the actual Scenery coffee shop. Truly phenomenal coffee. A pick of top espressos - I had mine as an cortado. Clearly menu and very knowledgeable staff. Big space and unreal food.

Puny Platypus Coffee has moved from a home-based project into a permanent bar at Promenade @ Pelikat in Singapore, with former Atlas Coffeehouse barista Zac Tan behind the counter. The compact room is centred on espresso and filter coffee, including a Mont Blanc-style iced black coffee with sea-salt milk foam and orange zest.

Why it matters: Singapore’s stronger openings are often easy to miss once they land outside the central café clusters. This is a focused, coffee-first independent to add when planning the north-east side of the city, rather than another broad brunch-led launch.

This was an amazing coffee experience - the spot is built just for it. It’s a small minimalist room just off a quiet street, with the coffee gear on one wall and the solo barista there to ask exactly what you want and explain the bean options. I went for an espresso with an Equador bean and it was really the best espresso I’ve had in Madrid. The barista even offered for me to smell the coffee after grinding. Great, hardcore coffee experience.

Sarutahiko Coffee has launched Coffee Spark in Tokyo, a new carbonated-coffee series led by Coffee Spark Cola and a seasonal watermelon Jellatte, available from 4 August through 14 September. The Ebisu-born specialty-coffee company says the drinks are built to explore coffee in a lighter, sparkling format while its regular coffee programme continues across participating shops.

Why it matters: This is a specific, time-bound menu change from one of Tokyo's established specialty-coffee names, not a routine café promotion. It offers a useful summer planning cue for readers interested in how serious roasters are translating coffee into seasonal, non-espresso formats.

Urban Coffee Roaster has opened its first overseas café in Tokyo, bringing the Hong Kong specialty-coffee brand to Gaienmae on 7 August. The 20-seat Aoyama space is led by co-founder Gary Au, a former Hong Kong Barista Champion, and introduces the roaster's coffee alongside a Specialty Yuen Yeung that reworks the Hong Kong coffee-and-tea drink through a specialty lens.

Why it matters: This is a concrete new international specialty-coffee arrival rather than a vague opening watch. Gaienmae sits within an already dense but design-conscious Tokyo coffee landscape, and the opening gives visitors a distinct Hong Kong-rooted programme to seek out while it is still new.

Discreet little coffee shop off a quiet street. There’s a hatch for takeaway outside which was bustling when I arrived. Inside, there’s a small square space with a few seats around the edge - this is a space for a quick stop. The coffee was UNREAL - the smoothest cortado I’ve ever had. And the space is very very cool, quite rustic, very Madrid. Would highly recommend.
