Merit Coffee plans three Houston cafes

Merit Coffee has announced three Houston cafes for 2026, beginning with a West University location expected in early July. The San Antonio-born specialty roaster says the first cafe at 5115 Buffalo Speedway will be followed by locations in The Heights and Memorial City, with local bakery Cake and Bacon supplying pastries and savory items.

Why it matters: Houston is not yet a Filter Notes city, so this is a future-market signal rather than a guide update. Merit already operates across San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas, and a three-cafe Houston entry gives us a concrete Texas specialty-coffee expansion to watch beyond the currently covered Austin map.

🇬🇧 London Coffee Festival names 2026 award winners

London Coffee Festival has named the 2026 LCF Awards winners, with Curators Coffee Studio taking Best Independent Coffee Shop and Carnival Coffee Roasters named Best Community Coffee Shop. The winners page also lists Mosey, Plant Shack Shoreditch, Spring Valley Coffee, Black Sheep Coffee, and Hermanos Colombian Coffee Roasters across the wider cafe, design, sustainability, and multiple-operator categories.

Why it matters: This is a useful London planning signal because two winners already sit inside the Filter Notes London guide, giving readers an immediate way to compare the public-vote result with reviewed shop context. Curators and Carnival also point to two different routes through the city: central independent espresso-bar energy versus a more neighbourhood-led south-east London roastery cafe.

🇺🇸 Sightglass opens first Bay Area cafe in nearly a decade

Sightglass Coffee opened a Berkeley cafe on May 7, its first new location in six years and first Bay Area expansion in nearly a decade. The new shop sits at UC Berkeley’s Helen Diller Anchor House and debuts Grizzly Peak Blend, described by Sightglass as its first Regenerative Organic Certified coffee, with a portion of proceeds supporting the Edible Schoolyard Project.

Why it matters: Berkeley is outside the current Filter Notes city list, but Sightglass is already part of our San Francisco context and this is a meaningful regional move from one of the Bay Area’s defining specialty roasters. It is worth tracking for future East Bay coverage, especially because the opening combines campus footfall, a community rent model, and a new sourcing-led blend.

🇺🇸 Villager plans a Park Slope expansion

Villager, the Filter Notes-listed Brooklyn multi-roaster cafe, is planning a new Park Slope outpost at 374 Fifth Avenue, according to Hoodline’s May 15 report citing Crain’s New York Business. The owners have not announced a firm opening date yet, but the planned shop would bring Villager’s espresso, rotating single-origin pours, and pastry program from Classon Avenue into one of Park Slope’s main retail corridors.

Why it matters: Villager is already one of the stronger coffee-first rooms on the New York shortlist, and a Fifth Avenue branch would materially change how readers can route coffee around Prospect Park, Gowanus, and central Park Slope.
