CUMBÉ's Monterrey 82 bar is a small, plant-filled stop in Roma, west of Mexico City's historic centre. A few tables sit beside the brewing counter and retail shelf. Mexican-grown coffee and Melbourne-style espresso drinks are the draw; the room has limited seating.
Coffee
Founder Rafael Hernández brought his Melbourne barista experience back to Mexico. Flat whites, long blacks and espresso use Mexican coffees roasted by CUMBÉ in San Rafael. Retail bags identify the producer, variety and process, with lots from several growing regions.
Filter
Chemex and Kalita feature on the manual-brew menu. The choice of coffee changes, so the available lot matters more than arriving with a particular origin in mind. Beans and brewing equipment are also sold at the bar.
Food
Bread and pastries accompany the drinks. Choose from the day's counter for a coffee break; the small tables leave little room for a larger group.
Service & Room
The Monterrey cafe opens daily until 8pm. La Tostadora, the company's San Rafael roastery and training space north-west of the centre, is a separate stop on Joaquín García Icazbalceta. Its public hours run Wednesday to Sunday, ending at 5pm.
Why Filter Notes shortlisted CUMBÉ Coffee Roasters
Choose Monterrey for a Mexican filter coffee or flat white during a Roma walk, with a bag to take home. San Rafael is the alternative for the roasting and training side of the business.
