KALVE Chiado

Chiado, Lisbon

KALVE's first Portuguese cafe brings Riga-roasted espresso and filter, retail tins and refills, and a calm Chiado room open into the evening.

Share

KALVE Chiado occupies a quiet corner of Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas Artes, close to the district's shopping streets but outside their main flow. Opened in May 2026, it is the Latvian roaster's first Portuguese cafe. Pale wood, stone, textiles, handmade ceramics and sculptural lamps bring Portuguese craft into a calm contemporary room that is easy to add to a central Lisbon day.

KALVE roasts in Riga and ships the coffee to Lisbon. The menu covers espresso, changing filter, decaf and cold drinks, while reusable tins, bags and refills make the retail shelf worth inspecting. Start with straight espresso or filter and add a pastry if you stay. This is an international brand rather than a Lisbon micro-roastery, but the coffee and room are specific enough to justify the stop.

Coffee

Espresso moves through named profiles and changing origins, while filter may include lots from Brazil, Mexico, El Salvador, Peru, Colombia and Ethiopia. Ask what is on batch or available as hand brew rather than arriving attached to one country. Espresso shows the more developed side of KALVE's roasting; filter reaches the lighter, more aromatic end.

Flat whites, iced filter, espresso tonic and a dedicated decaf option give groups a broad choice. Keep the first order simple: taste one coffee black before moving to milk or a chilled drink. Baristas discuss the range comfortably, and the quieter room gives them time to do it.

Pastry & retail

Fresh pastries include cinnamon rolls, but the offer is designed to accompany coffee rather than replace breakfast or lunch. A pastry and filter suit a mid-morning pause; eat elsewhere if you need a substantial meal.

Retail is more extensive. Beans come in bags and reusable tins, with a refill system aimed at regulars. Ask which espresso or filter profile matches your brewer, especially when the product name does not make the roast level obvious. The best advice connects a bag to a clear recipe and the flavours you actually enjoy.

Room & timing

Field Studio combines Portuguese woodworking, ceramics, textile and stone without turning the cafe into a showroom. Sculptural furniture and lighting reward a closer look, while the restrained palette suits reading, conversation or a short laptop session. Seating is limited, but the room feels less compressed than many central counters.

KALVE's long hours are an advantage. It opens early on weekdays and stays open into the evening, later than several of Lisbon's strongest coffee bars. The Largo sits between Chiado, Cais do Sodré and the river, so the cafe works well after nearby galleries or before dinner.

Why Filter Notes shortlisted KALVE Chiado

KALVE Chiado belongs on a Lisbon shortlist for a recognised roasting programme, a substantial retail offer and one of the centre's most carefully designed new rooms. KALVE won Roast Masters in 2025, and the Lisbon bar presents that coffee without making the service formal. The late closing time fills a real gap in the city's specialty-coffee day.

Order espresso or the most interesting current filter, add a cinnamon roll if available and inspect the tins or refill offer before leaving. Coffee is roasted in Riga rather than on site, and food stops at pastry. In return, KALVE provides a calm central room for tasting, a late coffee or half an hour away from Chiado's busiest streets.
