Montag Coffee Roasters

Kadikoy / Caferaga, Istanbul

An Asian-side roaster anchor for V60/filter, house-roasted beans, and a second-floor Kadikoy room.

Montag Coffee Roasters sits upstairs on Muvakkithane Caddesi in Kadikoy, the busy Asian-side district reached by ferry from central Istanbul. The climb changes the feel of the visit: street noise drops back, the balcony looks over the neighborhood flow, and the room becomes a place to settle with a hand brew rather than just grab a cup between shops. It is close enough to Moda and Caferaga to fold into a longer wander, but coffee is the reason to go up the stairs.

The Kadikoy room is the clearest visitor read on Montag: counter, terrace tables, retail beans, steady espresso service, and enough room to ask what is on filter without turning the exchange into a lecture. Montag also has a Bomonti address, but this review stays with the Kadikoy original-feeling stop, where the cafe still connects directly to the neighborhood walk outside.

Coffee

Montag is a house-roaster stop first. The official menu covers espresso, cortado, cappuccino, flat white, filter coffee, cold brew, Japanese iced coffee, and Turkish coffee made with specialty beans, so the easy order and the nerdier order can happen at the same counter. The style leans toward clear, aromatic coffees rather than heavy cafe sweetness; if you are choosing a bag, the shelf is not decoration.

Filter

Filter is the best reason to slow down here. Hario V60 sits on the menu, with bean choices handled at the bar, and the better visit is to ask what is drinking well before defaulting to the house filter. That small conversation is the difference between Montag as a pleasant upstairs cafe and Montag as a roaster cafe worth crossing to Kadikoy for. Buy beans if something clicks; the retail side is part of the point.

Food

Food is a supporting act, not the headline. Cakes, brownies, and small sweets make the second cup easier, and breakfast or lunch can be possible depending on the day, but Montag is not the Istanbul page to choose for a full brunch plan. Pair a filter or flat white with something sweet, then let Kadikoy provide the rest of the meal.

Service & Room

The room has a pause built into it: second floor, balcony edge, tables for a conversation, and the bustle of Kadikoy visible below rather than pressing directly against the counter. Baristas are part of the visit when you are choosing beans or a brew method, but the cafe still works for a straightforward cappuccino. The tradeoff is access and timing. Stairs make it less universal than a ground-floor counter, and the terrace can fill when the weather is good.

Use Montag when the Asian side is already the plan, not as a rushed detour from Sultanahmet or Beyoglu. Arrive after the ferry, walk through Kadikoy, go upstairs, check the V60 options, and leave with beans if the current roast suits you. The room rewards a slower stop, especially in the afternoon or evening when the official hours give you more room than many coffee-first cafes.

Why Montag Coffee Roasters is shortlisted by Filter Notes

Filter Notes shortlisted Montag Coffee Roasters because it gives Kadikoy a strong roaster-led room: house espresso, V60, specialty Turkish coffee, beans to take home, and a balcony-level pause that belongs to the Asian side rather than copying the European-side cafe circuit. Cross town for filter, beans, and a slower Kadikoy coffee stop; know before going that the second-floor setup will not suit every accessibility need.
