SonneCAD sits behind a studded wooden door in Tai Hang, east of Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. The two-storey former tenement has a coffee counter downstairs and a handful of tables upstairs, beside tall windows overlooking Sun Chun Street. Look for the sign outside: the closed door can make the cafe easy to miss. Come after lunch for a slow hand brew and a look through the beans.
Coffee
House-roasted single origins are the reason to visit. The selection runs across countries, varieties and processing methods, with small lots from producers in Ethiopia, Colombia and Panama among the changing choices. Tell the barista whether you prefer fruit, florals or a more chocolatey cup, then choose a pour-over. A serving tray brings the coffee with grounds to smell and a card linking to more information about the beans.
Cold brew offers another way to explore the selection, and milk coffees are available. For this stop, start with black coffee and leave time to taste it as it cools. Retail beans come in labelled containers; ask about the return scheme if you live nearby. The shop also sells brewing gear and holds occasional hand-brew workshops.
Service & Room
The ground-floor counter gives you a close view of the drippers and scales; head upstairs if you want to sit over your cup. Seating is limited, and the simple stools and small tables suit coffee better than a long working afternoon. Allow time for preparation. The welcome can be brusque, and the rarer coffees cost more, so check the selection and price before ordering. Plan food elsewhere.
