Kōkako's 40-square-metre bar sits on level one of Commercial Bay in central Auckland, beside the air bridge over Lower Albert Street. Timber counters and speckled recycled-plastic cladding surround a compact brewing station. Most seats are stools at the bar.
Coffee
The Auckland roaster specialises in organic, Fairtrade coffee. Blends and rotating single origins supply the espresso bar and retail shelf; cold brew comes from taps in the counter. Beans, refillable containers and brewing equipment are sold here too.
Filter
The filter station serves changing single origins beside the espresso setup. A pour-over is a good reason to head upstairs during a waterfront or Britomart visit, especially when you want to try the roaster's coffees before buying beans.
Food
The cabinet holds a small food selection. With little table space, the bar is better suited to coffee and a snack than a group meal.
Service & Room
Customers sit close to the equipment in the U-shaped counter. The compact layout puts brewing in view but leaves little spare space for bags or groups. The Mount Eden roastery offers weekday retail pickup; Commercial Bay is the cafe address.
Why Filter Notes shortlisted Kōkako
Kōkako brings a long-running Auckland roaster's espresso, filter and retail beans to a convenient waterfront location. Go for a cup at the counter, allowing for the limited seating.
