Five Ways Coffee Roasters occupies a broad-windowed corner beside Ten Kate Market, a neighbourhood shopping street in Oud-West, west of Amsterdam's canal centre. A mezzanine overlooks the substantial coffee counter, with pale surfaces, timber and window perches keeping the room open to the street. The original Kinkerstraat café is a good place to try the roaster's coffees before choosing beans for home.
Coffee
The range runs from a Brazil-and-Colombia house blend to changing single origins, with washed, natural and more experimental coffees. Ask which options are on espresso that day; the retail selection is wider than the coffees running in the grinders. A flat white gives you the familiar house order, while a black coffee is a useful starting point for exploring a different lot.
Filter provides another way into the roasting range. Check the day's batch and hand-brew choices, then browse the beans and brewing equipment once you have tasted a cup. The retail coffees change with the roasting schedule.
Food
Pastries, sweet bakes and bagels cover a market-morning breakfast or a snack with coffee. Choose from the counter when you arrive. The broader brunch menu belongs to the second café at Boerhaaveplein in eastern Amsterdam; it does not automatically apply to Kinkerstraat.
The room
Order at the counter and take a perch by the windows to watch the market. The corner setting, music and informal seats suit meeting someone over a drink. There is more volume here than in many small Amsterdam bars, but it is still worth checking the available tables before bringing a group.
Boerhaaveplein is mapped separately with its own hours. Choose the original for a coffee before shopping at the market, or the eastern café when a fuller meal is part of the plan.
